Skykomish Open Air Markets Get Underway May 13, 2017
Skykomish Open Air Market in the Spring.
Great Northern Cascade miniature 7-1/2 gauge railroad that now has over 2,000 feet of track. SKYKOMISH, WA — The first Skykomish Open Air Market of the spring and summer season gets underway Sat. May 13 in the historic railroad town of Skykomish up near Stevens Pass and just off Highway 2.
The Markets are held from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on the second Saturday of the month, May through September. The rest of the Market dates are: June 10, July 8, August 12 and September 9th.
The location is Depot Park, a grassy picnic area along Railroad Avenue in Skykomish’s historical district.
At market days you’ll find an array of products ranging from garden art to woodcraft and hand sewn and knit items as well as a wide assortment of handcrafted jewelry, art & photography prints and cards, soaps and salves and much more from local Sky Valley vendors.
And don’t forget the Great Northern and Cascade mini-train – a scaled down version of the real thing – will be running each weekend from May 6th through October 29th. This is the fifth season for the train providing rides to visitors and it’s a big hit with kids and adults alike.
There is now over 2,700 feet of track and volunteers are working on the “second line.” When completed the train will have 4,000 feet of track.
The GN&C Railway has one locomotive and ten riding cars. It was built by community volunteers in addition to all the locomotives owned by members that they use to give rides to the public.
There’s also a Museum, Gift Store and Visitor Center now open 10am – 4pm Monday through Friday thanks to a community grant from King County 4Culture.

The Skykomish Historical Society is also holding an Upper Sky Valley History event from noon to 4 pm on May 13th. Stations will be set up at Maloney’s General Store for the main “valley villages” that extend from Index to Stevens Pass.
There will be lots of photos from past to present plus resident experts to answer questions. Refreshments will be served.
The Skykomish Environmental Institute is also having a cleanup of the Maloney Creek Trail from 10 am to Noon on May 13. This short but very nice trail above the creek is an easy 10-minute walk for visitors beginning near the Post Office.
